Xavier Prevost is a Senior Coal Analyst at XMP Consultant as well as the editor of AfriCoal Energy Review, a monthly review covering events and information related to the South African, and the African coal industry in general. It is the only publication produced in South Africa that focuses on the country's coal industry.
Xavier spoke to Mining IQ about the current state of coal indstury and his thoughts on the direction it is heading.
Mining IQ: Can you describe the current state of the African coal mining industry?
Xavier Prevost: The SA coal industry is going through a process of adaptation to new regulations, new economy and a smaller reserve base. New coal resources, to replace the Central Basin (traditional coal mining area) semi-depleted coalfields need to be investigated and developed, provided the economic feasibility of the new deposits is supported by solid infrastructure developments. Coal exports are decreasing due to problems experienced with rail, port, the lack of new export mine capacity and in the future, due to limitation of suitable higher grade coal resources. The competitiveness of SA steam coal in the European, Indian and Chinese markets should permit SA to continue its current level of exports which could increase to 100Mtpa by 2020, provided more new projects are brought on stream. SA domestic sales are expected to continue increasing in tonnage and prices by 2020 mainly to satisfy power generation demands.
