Building an Australian Indigenous Mining Workforce and Developing Employment Opportunities: Experiences and Practices of the ALERT Initiative
The Australian mining industry is undergoing a resurgence in economic development and an accompanying interest in Indigenous employment in remote regions of the nation. Driven by legislative reforms, during the 1990s, mining companies are engaging with Indigenous people to increase their participation in the workforce and facilitate improved socio economic conditions in Aboriginal communities.
This paper describes the work related outcomes of Indigenous people who were participants of an educational vocational programme that was inaugrally delivered by the international mining company Rio Tinto Alcan at Nhulunbuy in the remote Gove Peninsula of the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia.
