FIFO turns Mine Towns to "Skeletons"
The CFMEU says Queenslanders should be wary of increasing FIFO (fly-in fly-out) workers for fear regions could become too similar to parts of Western Australia.
ABC News reports CFMEU national secretary Dave Noonan has travelled to north-west Queensland and expressed concern over rising FIFO quotas at mines.
"[It has] been a Western Australian phenomenon for a long time but it's going to become a push from resource companies in Queensland," he said.
Noonan said increased FIFO workers could see rural communities "turned into skeletons".
The Federal Government FIFO inquiry has been traveling Australia for most of the year visiting mining regions.
It has heard evidence from locals and experts on how FIFO work is damaging communities and risking the health of workers.
Last month the Centre of Environmental Management in Queensland said while miners often worked difficult rosters and long hours they were still happy and their families and relationships remained stable.
