Iain Allen
Senior Manager - GIS Barrick Gold Corp, CANADA |
Iain has a Honours Bachelor's Degree in Geology from the University of Toronto and a Postgraduate Certificate in Theoretical and Applied GIS from Simon Fraser University. He has worked for a number of mining companies, both juniors and majors. His early years after graduation were spent in field exploration, from field mapping to definition drilling, primarily in northwestern Ontario and Quebec, in the search for greenstone-hosted gold deposits. Throughout his exploration career he has been involved in using computers for data collection, management and analysis. In the early 1990s he discovered GIS and eventually became the North American GIS Coordinator for BHP Minerals, based in Denver, Colorado. After leaving BHP in 1999, Iain started a successful GIS consulting firm, Geoscience Information Services, providing consulting, training and application development services to the minerals industry. His clients included Anglogold, Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton, Inco, Placer Dome, the Ontario Geological Survey and the USGS. For the past 5 years he has been with Barrick Gold and is now Senior Manager – GIS. This is a global role, providing strategic direction and coordination of a variety of projects. Chief among them is the implementation of a global Spatial Data Infrastructure to promote better data management, and facilitate other initiatives, like 3D model management, digital mapping, online mapping and more sophisticated use of GIS throughout Barrick.
