Training Those Unfamiliar With GIS to Ensure Proper System Usage
|
GIS in Mining Webinar Overview:
In today’s complex and competitive environment, GIS offers multiple applications in the mining industry with tools to gather, compile, process, display, analyse, and archive extensive volumes of data. A well designed, implemented, and supported GIS management structure is critical to the success of your mining or exploration operation.
At Mining IQ's recent online GIS event, A group of global GIS and spatial data (SDI) experts gathered to disseminate and share global best practice and to discuss matters of mutual importance; about where the GIS is headed and what strategies both mine sites and exploration companies can use for heightened results and advantage. This session, specific to upskilling your staff to use GIS systems effectively, was really valuable and pertinant.
Training Those Unfamiliar With GIS to Ensure Proper System Usage
- One of the biggest challenges for GIS professionals is that of ensuring the system can be accessed and used appropriately by non-experts from other divisions.
- Developing and implementing effective training methods for non-GIS users to allow new staff to be effective members of your team faster, and minimise the chance of data corruption and mismanagement
- Developing and documenting procedures for non-GIS staff
- Written vs. audio-visual methods
- Controlling access to and manipulation of GIS data
- The importance of on-going coaching
- Explaining GIS terminology and practices

Chris Pedler, GIS Officer, Goldfields - ST IVES, Australia
Chris Pedler holds a Diploma in Spatial Studies from Sydney Institute. His major work involved an analysis of satellite tracking data of the dugong population of Shark Bay, with a view to identifying areas of significance to the species as they moved around the bay over a year, and developing theories as to why these areas were important. Chris has been working in the GIS industry for 5 years, firstly at Sydney Water Plans Management Section, where he was responsible for identifying and cataloguing the plan archive, quality control of the digitised images and development of the data storage system. Chris now works as the GIS Officer at Goldfields St Ives in Kambalda WA, where he is responsible for maintenance of their GIS data. This includes supporting the Exploration, Environmental, Engineering and active mines departments, development of drill planning tools, co-ordinating the exchange of data between different departments and interests, and promoting the use of GIS across the mine site. He also trains new staff in the use of GIS and develops training tools and procedures for GIS usage at St Ives.
