Mine Rescue and Emergency Management - Trapped miners in New Zealand gold mine
Last week saw the 2nd serious mining incident in New Zealand in the last year. Thankfully – the severity and loss of life that shocked us all post the Pike River Coal Mine disaster was not repeated here and all 28 miners were safely rescued.
After rescue it was clearly that the workers had followed their safety briefings and procedures and had remained hunkered down in three safety chambers after the mine began to fill up with acrid smoke.
An emergency was declared when the engine of a 40-ton dumper truck - used to haul loads of raw material through the tunnels to the surface - burst into flames.
Smoke quickly spread back along mineshafts to where the men were working, 500ft underground. The alarm was raised at 5am local time, when the miners were close to finishing a 10-hour overnight shift.
Newmont, the US-owned company which operates the mine, was quick to issue a statement assuring relatives there was no danger of an explosion.
Glen Grindlay, the mine's operations manager, said at the time "There's nothing to explode in a gold mine, so we stay in a refuge chamber and we wait for help." Praising the rescue effort, he also announced the miners were "fine and everyone's in good spirits".
The rescue effort was a good example of the lessons learned post the Pike River disaster and also hopefully can serve as an example of how important a safety culture is within any mining operation and organisation.
