As part of the lead up to the Mineral Processing Plant Design and Construction event to be held from the 13 - 15 November in Brisbane, Queensland, Mining IQ interviewed Iztok Livik, Stream Leader at the Minerals Down Under Research Flagship, CSIRO.
Mining IQ: Can you talk about innovation and its role in mineral processing plant design – why is it so important now?
Iztok Livik: Innovation is extremely important whatever one’s field of endeavour. If you don’t innovate somebody else will and with time you will unavoidably fall behind. Continuous innovation is absolutely essential in the minerals industry, which together with the oil and gas industries provides more than 50% of the nation’s export revenues (around $180b).
(i) declining ore grades and increasing mineralogical complexity,
(ii) increasing competition from emerging new rivals,
(iii) limited availability of water,
(iv) carbon pricing, and
(v) higher community expectations in terms of the environmental responsibility.
In addition, particularly in Australia there is additional pressure from the ongoing skilled labour shortage, with a large number of engineers, plant operators and trade workers currently in demand. New graduates in the next few years can only partially fill this demand, only around 50% of positions required.
