Mining IQ Member Profile: Anthony Bottrill, Mineral Resource Manager, Great Basin Gold
Mining IQ is proud to profile its members from mining companies around the globle and to share some of their experiences and stories with you all.
This month on Mining IQ we are profiling Anthony Bottrill, Mineral Resource Manager, Great Basin Gold.
He has over 11 years of geologic modelling experience at world class operations including developing mineral resource models for copper, gold, uranium, and silver deposits and has been working for Great Basin Gold since December of 2010
What is your role and what are your responsibilities?
I am the Mineral Resource Manager for Great Basin Gold’s Nevada Operations. We have an operating high grade epithermal gold mine called Hollister, at the northern end of the Carlin trend.
My overall role is to manage the continued extension and mining of the Hollister resource. This involves oversight of drilling, modelling, and mine geology functions to ensure continued operations of the mine both today and for the future.
How long have you worked in the mining industry?
I have worked in the mining industry for 12 years. I am an Australian citizen so most of my career has been spent working within Australia. My roles have ranged from working as a geotechnical officer, through to being a mining geologist and mining software specialist, through to working as a senior resource geologist.
A year ago I took the opportunity to come to Nevada so that I could expand my experience and career working on younger deposits. It has also enabled my wife and kids to join in the experience of travel and different cultures.
How did you embark on a career in the mining industry?
I undertook a geology class in year 11 at school. I always enjoyed the outdoors and realised that geology and mining were a great way to work outdoors, travel extensively, and get paid a reasonable wage doing so. Being a geologist has provided great opportunities to me which I will always be thankful for.
What advice would you give to others also looking to work in this field?
Find opportunities in which you are always learning and expanding your experience. Be open to learning and taking ownership of the work you do. Geologists are very good at collecting data, the best geologists are prepared to interpret it so that they make sound decisions that add the most value.
What do you enjoy the most about your role?
I enjoy most having a positive impact on other geologists and problem solving. I enjoy adding to the operations of the mine and working towards extending the mine’s life. I also enjoy working with a group of geologists with widely differing skill sets, and helping them to work as a team towards common goals.
What’s ahead for the mining industry in 2012 from your perspective?
Being in the gold industry, my interest lies in where the gold price could end up. Particularly with the state of the global economy post GFC. As an industry we need to concentrate on getting the basics right and not get carried away thinking that the boom will never end. Working efficiently to keep costs low but fostering innovation, good planning, and “out of the box” thinking can add significant value.
From a geologist perspective, 2012 is about growing the experience of our geological team and advertising the benefits of the work we do. Portions of our work are often not easily measureable, but lead to the biggest benefits down the track when done well.
Why is Mining IQ a valuable resource for you?
Mining IQ is a valuable resource as it provides a central resource for finding information relevant to mining. From one site, we can tap into how people from all over the globe conduct their work. It is very easy to be blinkered in this industry, so any resource that provides further learning opportunities is always welcomed.
