Next Generation Mining with BHP's Gavin Yeates

Posted: 03/12/2013

Mining IQ spoke exclusively to Gavin Yeates, Vice President Mine Optimisation at BHP Billiton, ahead of his presentation at the Austmine 2013 Conference & Exhibition. In this interview Gavin discussed:

  • How new technologies are changing mining processes
  • The importance of planning prior to the implementation of automation
  • How change management is an important challenge at BHP Billiton

"We’re actually at the cusp of moving to what we’re calling, "Next Generation Mining". This is driven on one hand by technology advances, in autonomy and sensing. That coincides with a drive for growth in far more complex, deeper, lower grade ore bodies in an environment where we’ve got real challenges in operating and capital cost pressures."
Gavin Yeates, Vice President Mine Optimisation, BHP Billiton

Gavin Yeates also shares his belief that the drive is to align production processes with maintenance processes, and standardise what they do and how they do it. The aim is to reduce variation prior to the introduction of automation.
