GIS And 3D Modelling In The Geological Survey Of South Australia - Applications For Exploration Area Selection, Land Use Decision-Making And Product Development

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are utilised throughout the mineral exploration and mining sector due to the ability to effectively bring together data and ensure effective analysis.

The South Australian Government has a global reputation of being extremely supportive of exploration and mining. One unconventional example of this is an active program of regional mineral potential modeling to assist in exploration decision-making processes, and along with concurrent 3D modeling projects, provide a powerful targeting tool for explorationists.

At a recent GIS in Mining and Exploration Conference organised by IQPC, Laz Katona, Senior GIS Geologist with the Geological Survey Branch of Primary Industries and Resources SA, presented on the subject of GIS And 3D Modelling. The presentation focused on the following areas:

  • Mineral potential modeling is driven by the need for informed land use planning
  • Projects utilize different processes according to the area and the nature of available data
  • Several mineral potential models, as well as 3D models exists for the state at different resolutions
  • Such programs give the agency an international profile
