GIS - A Mine of Information

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is defined by one of the market leaders, AE SRI, as a tool that "integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analysing and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information".

The GIS is most familiar in the form of displaying intelligent maps that show a range of data graphically, or in point form, related to the Earth’s surface. An example might be coloured contours showing rainfall levels on a 3D relief map. In mining and mineral exploration terms, the potential is endless.
