Brownfield Feasibility Studies and Project Implementation

Brownfield Feasibility Studies and Project Implementation: Industry Focus

Definitive feasibility studies cost large amounts of time, money and energy, often involving hundreds of people and millions of dollars, as consultants and in-house staff try to push toward combined multidisciplinary cooperation. As the mining industry picks back up in 2011, competition for investors and resources will be tougher than ever. With this in mind - it is essential that you ensure that you improve and build upon already-existing team structures to deliver an appropriately detailed report.

At a recent industry event, David Readett, Group Manager – Project Development for Minara Resources presented his perspective around the challenges of brownfield feasibility studies and project implementation.

Additional challenges are faced when having to conduct a brownfield FS compared to a greenfield FS. These challenges continue to develop through project implementation. David utilised experience from a number of both brownfields and greenfields studies and projects with companies including Mount Isa Mines, Straits Resources and most recently Minara Resources, to pull together this presentation. Subject matter included:

  • Understanding existing operational limitations
  • Engaging with existing operations management and personnel: the challenge of getting buy-in from operations
  • Development of a win-win strategy for project team and operations
  • Managing the key brownfields interfaces in terms of both process and infrastructure
