Strategies for the Closure of Tailings Storage Facilities

Strategies for the closure of tailings storage facilities

Mine rehabilitation and closure is a developing and complicated process often involving many stakeholders, from in-house planning and environmental specialists, to regulators, consultants and community bodies. As governments demand greater detail in planning at the preliminary stages of mine operations, the need for progressive and practical styled closure plans is critical. The success of these plans and the alignment of goals between all stakeholders will determine the time taken to reclaim and decommission the site, and relinquish tenements and bonds.

IQPC's recent Mine Rehabilitation and Closure conference focused on incorporating progressive style closure plans, stakeholder management and cohesion, and helping rehabilitation teams measure and manage unforeseeable issues (both technical and societal) at the final decommissioning and mine reclamation stages.

Augustine Doronila, PhD Research Fellow - Restoration Ecologist & Post-mining Reclamation Expert, University of Melbourne, presented at this recent Mine Rehabilitation and Closure planning Conference with IQPC in 2010. Augustine has been involved in an extensive research project with three gold mine sites in Victoria, including Northgate Minerals’ Stawell mine site.

Augustine's presentation was specific to the closure of tailings storage facilities and was one of the highest rated presentations at the event. The presentation focused on the lifecycle of a tailings storage facility and is a cautionary tale.
