Over the past two decades there have been significant advances in our understanding of the causes and potential effects of Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) from mining and mineral processing operations. Early recognition and management of AMD is necessary to produce a significantly better environmental outcome at mine closure.However, AMD remains a challenging subject that continues to be underestimated and long term management costs are often not correctly factored into company balance sheets.

This Webinar presents an overview of the occurrence and potential impacts of AMD and is based upon twenty years’ of experience at mining operations both in Australia and overseas. Several case studies are integrated throughout the technical parts of the presented paper to provide relevant context and to ‘bring the geochemistry and concepts to life’.

The presentation includes information on methods used to predict and prevent AMD, although it is recognised that in some cases AMD can only be mitigated. Additional sources of useful information on AMD are also provided for further reading.

Alan has over twenty years industrial and consulting experience in completing geochemical and acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) projects for the mining and mineral processing industry.  He has provided input into a wide variety of studies for major mining companies ranging from stand-alone technical reports to integral components of Bankable Feasibility Studies.  He has worked on projects in Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and South America and is regularly called upon to Peer Review AMD work completed by other consultants. 

Alan has particular expertise in mine waste characterisation, development of AMD management plans, and design of mine waste storage facilities from project conception through to mine closure. He has experience of potential downstream impacts of mining activities and project specific mitigation measures Alan is also an experienced Environmental Auditor and regularly assists clients with due diligence and compliance audits.
