All information contained in this document was collected from publically available sources, with insight provided through the direct operational experience of Haultrax personnel in surface mining automation. After considerable interest and trials of autonomous haulage, the mining industry’s knowledge and understanding of autonomy is maturing. Drill automation is fast becoming the next key technology to be commercially tested and trialled by tier one early adopters.

A greater understanding of how to obtain the long published benefits of increased safety, productivity and cost effectiveness; through people, process and system changes is now being realised. In addition to these, there is particular interest in automating the drilling process in order to obtain greater ore body knowledge – ensuring higher mineral recovery and reducing the overall cost of mining. At present, Atlas Copco and Flanders are seen as the leading solution suppliers to the key user group of Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton and Newmont. This document is an insight into the current solutions offered with a background provided on developments to date.
