The challenging conditions now confronting the mining industry have put renewed emphasis on the need for productivity gains to preserve margins. While much of the focus has been on the more obvious macro-level measures such as increasing output, job cuts and general cost containment, there are a range of lesser-recognised, micro-level metrics and associated initiatives that also have an important place in any productivity-improvement strategy.

This podcast with Jim Hoban from SIBA Solutions, will explore some of these metrics and initiatives, showing how significant productivity gains can be achieved.

Questions covered by Jim include:

  1. Firstly, can you comment on how Australia's mining industry is performing in terms of productivity?
  2. Why is it doing so badly do you believe?
  3. What do you think can be done to address the problem?
  4. Could you provide a couple of examples of what you believe would be useful micro-based productivity analysis "gems" that miners may be able to tap into?
  5. How can/could people find out more about some of these measures and initiatives?
